The MobileID ecosystem, developed and published by the Federal Government of Nigeria, is designed to provide seamless, secure and safe digital credentials (also known as tokens) for every day use in Nigeria.
Gone are the days of “where is my ID Card”. With the new MobileID applications, the NIMC is bringing Nigeria forward into the Digital Economy of the 21st Century and puts the country on the short, but growing list of nations that have deployed and passed into law, Mobile Identity.
The MobileID Consumer Application, which is available on Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android Operating Systems, provides anyone with a Smartphone running either of these platforms, the means to provision their Personal Identity in the palm of their hand, from the comfort of their home without the need to visit a Government office!
For those still wishing to have a physical document they can put in their wallet/purse, the sister tokens of the Improved NIN Slip, is also available via self-service.
Before you can obtain the new MobileID digital credentials, you will need:
Show My ID is where you will find your National Identity Card in Digital Format. It is a valid means of Identification in Nigeria and must be accepted as so, on the condition that the QR Code is verified each time it is presented, using either the MWS MobileID or MWS Enterprise Applications.
When the QR Code is scanned using an MWS Mobile ID application, the ID of the person wishing to be verified, appears on the verifier’s phone.
This is not the end of the matter though. The UserID of the verifier will be captured as a part of the verification audit trail. This is to ensure that there is a record of whom veerified the Identity of another.
The MobileID by default, will display your full ID, including:
The Document Number of the ID is also displayed.
Not everyone needs access to one’s Nationality, Date of Birth or gender. The ID holder reserves the right to display a limited data set for verification.
When the verifier scans the barcode, only that information is displayed.
The ID Holder has access to all records stating the UserID of the verifier, the type of verification made and the date, all for future reference.
This list includes verifications made of their NIN slip as well. So even when an ID Holder is not present with the NIN Slip (say they left it somewhere), they will be advised of whom carried out the verification and when.
