¶ Digital Credentials
¶ What are they?
The Federal Government of Nigeria has introduced a suite of Digital Tokens to replace the aging the NIN Slip and Polycarbonate Card.
These tokens use state-of-the-art technology, processes and procedures and follow International Best Practices in their administration and issuance.
The Principles of Privacy by Design, Self-Sovereign Identity and Data Protection are utilised without compromise.
¶ Pre-requisites
You need a:
- National Identification Number (NIN) issued by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC). You get this by enrolling and submitting your biometrics
- mobile Number, registered in Nigeria and linked to your NIN (we call this your Trusted Number)
- Smartphone or feature phone with the SIM (or eSIM) with the Mobile Number described in [2] above.
The Improved NIN Slip has a smaller form-factor and is available to all who have been issued an active NIN. They may be purchased without having to visit a NIMC Office.
They are also provided during first issuance after enrolment.

The Virtual NIN is issued by an ID Holder who has onboarded the NIMC MobileID application. The Virtual NIN is issued to a specific verification entity and may only be verified by that entity and no one else.
